GAMLINGAY ART EXHIBITION AND HERITAGE WEEKEND

By Roderick Starksfield

This has been our fifth Art Exhibition held at the Church. Like all the previous it was a great success.

We had 189 paintingsBell for sale, of which we sold 37. For exhibitions of this type, this is a very high proportion. Most of the artists were local, many from the village itself. It was noted that we had in influx of visitors as soon as we opened on the Saturday, because as, some people said, they “wanted to be there before the best paintings were sold!”

Firstly, I would like to thank all the artists. The standard was very high, the paintings being a mixture of most mediums - water-colour and oil being the most popular.

Secondly, the exhibition would have been impossible without the help of the volunteers who helped to hang the pictures and acted as stewards.

The Exhibition was organised on behalf of the Friends of St Mary, who raise funds for maintaining the church building. The final figure raised was nearly £650 pounds.

On the Sunday, the Emplins was open to visitors, who saw demonstrations of Lace-making,Bookbinding, Breadmaking, and Quilting.

Despite the shortage of fuel, many people travelled from far and wide to come to Gamlingay, and many people said that they had enjoyed themselves.
