M y dear friends,

Sadly this will be the last time I will look out from the Rectory and reflect on the Church, the parish and the world.

It seems appropriate that we should be leaving in November – the month of Remembrance. To remember means ‘to bring back into ones thoughts’. For Brenda and myself it will mean looking back over 34 years of Parish Ministry. To remember those people in the early days in Boreham Wood and St Albans then latterly Cambridge, Gamlingay and Everton. I have learnt so much from those who through their courage in suffering, openness, honesty and spiritual perception have taught me much about God.

We will leave with gratitude in our hearts for the Christian family here and at Hatley and Everton. Rural ministry is becoming increasingly difficult especially where there are ancient buildings to maintain and multiplicity of Parishes. Yet, despite the changing pattern of parish life we are discovering a wealth of talents, leadership and goodwill and often fun as we strive to work together as priest and people in a shared ministry.

I believe that at the end of the day you can only ‘love’ people into God’s Kingdom. That word ‘love’ seems to me to sum up everything. Prayer is ‘love’ - love in action as we unite with God’s will with our inner longings and fears. The Sacraments, Baptism and Holy Communion are outward signs of God’s love. Sharing in the joy of a couple standing before you at their marriage or sitting beside someone in pain or dying draws on that power beyond oneself - love. The Church begins to live in the Community when its members are open to and reflecting God’s motivating power of love.

Brenda and I thank you for making our time here so special. We thank you for the tremendous support and love you have given us. Parting is never easy and we shall miss so many people that have come our way during the past six years. With St Paul we too can say ‘I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now.’

May God richly bless you all.

Alan
