LEO CHURMS IN DENMARK

by Leo Churms, 7DS

Sunday 23rd July
Arrived at Harwich Leodocks feeling very nervous but excited about my trip to Denmark. This would be the first time I had been alone in a foreign country.

Monday 24th July
Arrived in Denmark and went to the school accommodation where we were staying for the week. We then took part in the Opening Ceremony for the Dana Cup 2000 by marching through the town of Hjorring. There were hundreds of teams there and I felt very proud - we were the only team from England.

Tuesday 25th - Saturday 28th July
The Dana Cup competition took place and I was in the 11-a-side Under 12 team, which was a bit older than I was used to as I was expecting to play for the 7-a-side Under 11 team! In our Group we had teams from Germany, Denmark and two teams from Finland. We beat both the Finnish teams 6-0 and 3-1, lost 1-0 to the Danes but we did beat the Germans 3-1!

LeoThis meant we qualified for the second round knockout stages as runners-up in our Group. In the second round we beat a team from Sweden 6-0 and I scored one of the goals - my first in the tournament. We then played a strong team from Finland in the quarter finals and just lost 1-0. We were gutted! They went on to the final and it could have been us.

On our last full day we went to Legoland, which was brilliant but, most important of all, I really enjoyed the trip. The competition was fantastic and the standard amongst all the countries was extremely high. It was a great experience and I hope I get the chance to go again.
