VANDALISM AND GRAFFITI

By our Parish Councillors

Is this what we really want our village to be best known for? Is this really what we want for Gamlingay? If not... then we, as villagers, have to do something about it.

As you all probably know by now, Gostlings has been broken into once more with much physical and psychological damage for little financial gain. Once again the village toilets have been trashed and Graffiti is spreading not only on the village road signs (Green Acres especially) but along Station Road brickwork and around the bridge. In fact, some areas of the village look more like deprived suburbs of Paris or London.

Sadly, the village is fast becoming an easy target for local thugs, local criminals and a scribbling pad for its rebellious youth. Clearly something has to be done. Gam Partnership Whilst culprits are known to our local community beat officer, PC Martin Wood, villagers and the Parish Council, the police can only prosecute on clear evidence. So far it has been difficult to gather this until now: we need to be able to catch the offenders at their act. The P.C have agreed that CCTV may have to be an option. As and when this is installed will be known only to the Police and P.C. Meanwhile a volunteer group of all ages will monitor trouble spots until the system is up and running. Unfortunately the Community Centre toilets may have to be closed The village is not bound to provide loos, especially if they continue to be vandalised. The unnecessary aggravation, time and expense can be put to better use.

As you have gathered, we need your help to reduce village crime. The P.C is very approachable and they would like to hear your views and solutions. Please call or write...anonymously if you wish.

If you see vandals at work, do not interfere but quickly phone 01480 456111 where PC Martin Wood has assured us that action will be taken.

Thank you
