Safer Routes to School is a scheme to encourage pupils to think about personal safety
Pupils at the Village College took questionnaires home last year for parents, while pupils completed their version in school. Interestingly a first look at the initial results showed that parents were concerned about safety on the roads, and some very good suggestions were made. These included:
At this time a committee was formed, with teachers from the Village College, pupils from the School Council, and representatives from the Governing Body, the Parish Council, the District Council and Gamlingay First School, all working towards improving facilities in the village. `Planning for Real' meetings were held on Thursday, 29th March at the school. At these meetings a 3-D model of the village and the surrounding environment was on display. Villagers were able to look at the plan and offer ideas for the type of improvements needed to the approaches to the school, and the village, and make them safer. Over 40 questionnaires were completed at these sessions. A report will now be written by the Safer Routes to Schools Co-ordinator, Miss Lesley Hall, with proposals that will be forwarded to the county engineers. When agreement has been reached with the county another evening will be arranged to consult with residents on the proposals. Work on improving footpaths in the village has already been started, with better lighting seen as an important part of the plans. The College will be receiving new cycle racks as part of the scheme, and hope to develop cycling proficiency training for pupils as well. All pupils at the College will also be receiving a travel plan called `Staying Alive' next term.
