PARISH CHURCH OF ST.MARY THE VIRGIN

ear Friends,
The days when people had to go to church to look respectable, or to see and be seen, are long gone, and a good job too. No-one comes nowadays unless they want to, unless they feel truly drawn there. And more people feel drawn to come to Church at Christmas than at any other time.
That isn't just because of fleeting, hazy memories of childhood; not even just because of the pleasure we take in showing our own children the 'magic of Christmas' which once delighted us when we were little. There is more going on beneath the surface. An unspoken, unacknowledged longing for life to mean more than 'eat, drink, shop and watch telly' - a sense that somehow a baby in Bethlehem made a difference to the whole world. If you think it's time to listen to that inner voice, come and celebrate with us, with all the world, that Christ is born. But if you aren't ready yet, don't worry, for in God's good time the moment will come, and you will hear his gentle voice calling you.
The angels promised the shepherds 'Peace on earth, goodwill to all people'. Let us pray this Christmas that their promise may be fulfilled:
Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long;
Beneath the angel-strain have rolled two thousand years of wrong.
And man, at war with man, hears not the love-song which they bring.
O hush the noise, ye men of strife, and hear the angels sing.
The peace of the infant Jesus be with you all this Christmas,
Yours in the love of God,
Cally Hammond
