Dear Friends,

One of the texts you will not see on a Christmas card is, "Herod is going to search for the child (Jesus) to kill him."

These words reveal the dark and sinister things of evil. The young Child portrays love and purity, goodness and kindness. Herod portrays that which is evil, deceitful, and seductive. But this was the world into which God his sent one and only Son. Look at the young Child. He is a Child born to humanity; the Son given by God. Full of grace and truth, he is the explanation of God's ideal man, and the unveiling of God's love for mankind. Look at Herod. He is the very incarnation of pride, of perversity, of pollution. Herod will seek the young Child to destroy him! But he will not succeed. It is Herod who will be destroyed, and that by the young Child. But the way to victory will be through death on a cross. The way of wounding, of anguish, and of death. How significant these things are today! Herod is still seeking to destroy, and he and his ways may always be discovered by the hatred of the young Child. Everything that threatens the Child life, however stunningly it may be arrayed, is inherently evil.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,
Descend to us we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in;
Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Immanuel.

The folks at the Baptist Church wish the readers a peaceful Christmas.

God bless you,

Tom Elsby
