GRANTEBRIGGE
The Archaeology of Early Cambridge by Cameron Hawke-Smith, Curator

There is a major temporary exhibition at the Folk Museum as part of the City of Cambridge Octocentenary Celebrations. On display until 21st December.

The exhibition tells the story of the place we know as Cambridge from earliest times until the year of the first Chapter, 1201 AD.

A rich assortment of objects, images and documents show how the Welsh-speaking Celts were absorbed into the Roman Empire, how the Roman town disappeared under grass and wild flowers, how the invading Saxons settled the banks of the river Granta, how the Danes in turn destroyed their communities and developed an inland port, and from all these elements a bustling market town emerged by the time of the Normans.

The exhibition contains opportunities for children to discover, handle and explore archaeological material in stimulating activities. 01223 355 159

NEEDLES WEAVING MAGIC
by Jackie Hough

For those of you whose view of patchwork and quilting conjures up an image of ‘granny in a bonnet peering over a set of half-glasses’ then think again.

Jacky Raeburn, (definitely not a peering granny image) is busily transforming the world of art by quilting her way to a First place in the Nationals. This is an outstanding achievement and congratulations must be extended to her for doing so well.

Don’t be fooled into thinking this was an easy ride, however. As anyone who has seen her work is well aware (you may have caught her displaying snippets of technique at The Emplins last summer as part of the craft fayre there) Jacky’s work is intricate, laboriously executed and unerringly accurate in all details. Even the back covers are finely finished. This attention to detail, coupled with a flair for colour, texture and design has allowed Jacky to excel in this innovative and very modern area of design. ‘Modern?’, I hear you exclaim. Well, take a look at the pictures produced and see for yourselves. No granny bonnets here!

STRUCTURE PLAN CONSULTATION RESULTS
by Kathy Baldwin

CCC

During February and March Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council undertook a wide ranging consultation on key issues to be decided during the review of the Structure Plan, looking forward to 2016.

The responses showed a high level of interest in the challenges the area is facing and the solutions that you would like to see - we received nearly 2,300 replies including over 2,000 questionnaire responses.

An initial analysis of the questionnaires and other responses has now been made and the findings are available to view on the web site www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Next is the formal deposit draft structure plan. There will also be an opportunity to comment on this draft.

WEEDS!

During the interregnum, the Churchwardens are responsible for the Parish Parsonage (in other words the garden at the rectory needs to be kept tidy - ed). At the moment the rectory is empty but no-one has told the weeds in the garden; they keep growing. Is there anyone with spare time who would be willing to spend a few hours a week cutting, snipping, pruning, weeding - as a volunteer? Please flock to Valerie Miller, 650779 or Brian Jones 650008 if you’d like to help.
