My Dear Friends,
IF ONLY ... Once again the Gazette deadline comes round. And just as the ideas start to flow, my computer makes alarming noises, as if it has developed a serious case of indigestion. What if there’s a virus crept in to the chips, through the spaghetti round the back? and why am I starting to feel hungry thinking about it? Seriously, it is possible that a virus is munching through the files - all those gripping sermons gone for ever, vanished into the eddies of the space-time continuum.
At this point self-recrimination sets in. Why didn’t I back everything up? I once lost a whole term’s work through not backing-up files. Still, even though I knew the risks, I hadn’t bothered. It’s as if only the most immediate threat of destruction can make me – and maybe I’m not alone - accept safety measures.
How many of us know about the wise precautions, but can’t be bothered? It may be trivial ‘If only I’d checked I had my purse before I drove to Sainsbury’s;’ or one day something more important is at stake; ‘if only they’d worn seatbelts’. And so, should the moral be one of caution, BE PREPARED? Perhaps not.
Jesus offered the ultimate challenge to an age of anxiety, one from which no precautions and backups can insulate us. He said, ‘Take no thought for tomorrow, for tomorrow can take care of itself. Seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness’. It’s a real
challenge so maybe we should have a go.
Yours in the love of God
