It

starts at Hatley St George with a little prayer in St George’s Church;there is a brief stop in Gamlingay Church for coffee/tea, followed by a prayer; and then it is on to Everton for a short service in the church and sandwiches, etc, in the Thornton Arms. Parishioners are welcome to do part or all of the walk. It is a real chance for members of all three churches to share a joint venture … and the bluebells look wonderful. Many years ago, the parish priest would beat the boundaries of the church on horseback once a year, and this is the nearest we come to it.

On Bank Holiday Monday, 5th May, from 1.30 to 4.00pm, The Wildlife Trust is offering everyone the chance to step out into the ancient woodland reserve of Gamlingay Wood to enjoy the sight and scent of the Spring flowers. The first half of May is an ideal time to visit, as large areas of the wood are carpeted with bluebells and other spring flowers and their beautiful scent fills the air.

Why not put on your walking shoes and join one of the Wildlife Trust team for a choice of walks?

A guided walk in the woods: Under the leadership of a woodland expert this walk will last about an hour and a half and offers the chance to learn more about the wildlife and the management of the wood. (Start 2.15pm)

Bluebell A family self-guided wildlife treasure trail: This marked trail gives the whole family a chance to explore the wood to find its hidden secrets, to collect ‘treasure’ and win a prize.

A boundary hike: A chance to take a longer walk at a fairly brisk pace around the boundary of Gamlingay Wood and the new Sugley Wood under the leadership of Wildlife Trust staff. (Start 2.00pm)

All visitors to the woods are recommended to wear walking boots, wellingtons or old trainers, as paths are uneven and can be very muddy in places.

It would really help in our planning if visitors could book places on any of the guided walks by e-mail to judith.lemon@wildlifebcnp.org or by phoning Judith on 07763171902

The Wildlife Trust, with the support of the SITA Trust, Heritage Lottery Fund, English Nature, the Forestry Commission, WREN, RMC Environment Fund and many local donors, is aiming to link Gamlingay Wood to Waresley and Gransden Woods, creating a huge new woodland corridor for both wildlife and people. There is no charge for the event but donations for the work of the Wildlife Trust will be gratefully received.

Hitherto the Village Show has been arranged and organised by a number of long-serving villagers who have recently retired from the team that put the show together. This means the production of the show falls on a very few shoulders, which is unsustainable in the long term.

If you can spare some time to either join the committee or to offer any help on the day itself, we would be extremely grateful as would all the villagers and children who enjoy the show. Your help however big or little would help secure future shows. For further details, please contact Hayley Parker on 01767 652992

The 16th Gamlingay Village Show

Summer is nearly here and that means it’s time to get those thinking caps on for your competition entries for the village show. There were a record number of entries last year and it would be great to see even more this year. The show will be on the 13th of September held at the Village College and competition entry is only 30p.

Last year’s show was a great success and raised the largest donations so far for worthy village causes.

We hope to exceed that amount this year with your help and attendance.

There are plenty of great attractions already organised for the show, so watch this space for more details.

Gates open at 1.00pm; the Hall opens at 2pm along with the commencement of the arena events.

Entry is £2 adults and £1 concessions.
