1926

WI Hall 1The Ellis family from Merton Grange originally donated the land and its building to the WI in 1926. This picture from that date shows the WI ladies taking part in a fancy dress parade at the Grange. Please make contact if you recognise any of those pictured.

2007

WI Hall 2Handover of the Women’s Institute Hall – 13th November 2007 County and District Councillor Mr Sebastian Kindersley thanked the Women’s Institute for their generous gift of the hall to the Parish Council, which will ensure that this valuable asset remains available for community use. Current users include Sunshine Pre-School, Youth Café, Gardening Club, Child Health Clinic and the WI themselves. The Parish Council will start holding meetings in the Hall from April 2008.

The Chairman of the Parish Council, Chris Tomsett, added his thanks and outlined the history of the Gamlingay WI. He explained that Councillor Mr L Jarvis is kindly arranging for a commemorative board to be made and hung in the hall. This will include a photograph of the founding members, donated by Mr Empson, and will be engraved with the names of 17 WI Presidents from its foundation in the village in 1921 to March 2007.

Current President Mrs L Tayler concluded the ceremony, saying a few words about how difficult a decision it had been for the WI to relinquish ownership of the hall, but that they now felt happy and grateful to the Parish Council for accepting the hall by deed of gift. Attendees enjoyed tea and homemade cakes, baked by the WI, and then posed for photos under the refurbished “Women’s Institute” sign.
