Following our appeal for help in the last edition, The Gazette is delighted to be able to announce that a replacement pc is on order thanks to the generosity of Peter Hutchinson, of Potton Ltd.
Thank you, too for all the personal donations we have received. In conjunction with our own reserves, we are now able to purchase the new software we so desperately needed.
If all goes well we will be using the new equipment for the September edition. So, no Summer break for the Editor who needs to be up to speed using the new software in time for the Autumn edition!
Dear Parish Council
I would like to bring to your attention my concerns regarding the ever-increasing problem of traffic obstructions in Church Street, Gamlingay.
As you may be aware, on numerous occasions each week this street is brought to a standstill. This congestion is preventing the prompt turnout and response of your local Fire Engine.
Whilst the Fire Engine itself has lights and sirens to indicate that an emergency vehicle requires access, the retained fire service relies on firefighters who are not based continually on station, but respond from their home or place of work in the event of an emergency turnout. Over half of the personnel who crew the fire engine in Gamlingay need to respond via Church Street. Although the Fire Station is not far from Church Street and the firefighters could leave their vehicles and run to the station, once in the congestion there is nowhere to leave the vehicles and abandoning them would only exacerbate the problem. Crews attending the Fire Station for an emergency have no jurisdiction over the Road Traffic Act and cannot use flashing lights or sirens to indicate they are attending an emergency!
On 19th May, the fire engine was again delayed in turning out to an emergency call due to vehicles being illegally parked in the No Waiting area in Church Street, reducing the road to a single lane with no possibility for vehicles to pass. My ultimate fear is that one day these delays are going to cost someone their lives. The situation is becoming increasingly worse and I feel there is an urgent need to fully address the situation. Current traffic measures are clearly ineffective.
Yours sincerely, John Kitchener,
Station Commander
Gamlingay Fire Station
