t 3.00pm on Saturday 2nd November, as drizzle turned to steady rain, members of the First School Association met on the school playground. We debated the conditions and agreed to proceed with the firework display as planned.

Fences were erected, the barbecue was lit and all was made ready. The rain continued to fall and our clothes became like a second skin.

Still we smiled (and shivered) and despite the downpour we opened on time at 5pm. Some hardy supporters bought their burgers and waited while others checked that we were still going ahead and returned later in the evening. Just before 7pm the rain subsided, the crowds came in and the countdown began.

After a short delay due to some rather damp fuses the display began. David Twydell produced a wonderful display and I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.

I would like to say a huge Thank You to David Twydell and everyone who worked so hard to make the event a success.

Thank You also to all who came and supported us, despite the weather. We hope to make this an annual event but hope to have an improvement in the weather next year.

When my son was 5 years old he wrote a poem:

“I am a damp squib,
I’ve just gone out.”

I am pleased to say that though we had a few technical hitches we had no damp squibs!

Thank You again, and see you next year.
